The Group for Support of Islam and Muslims (GSIM) has claimed its first official attack in Nigeria, which occurred on October 28 in Kwara during an assault on a military outpost, resulting in one fatality.
The attack is believed to have been launched from Kainji Park, a refuge for armed groups operating in the Northwest, four months after the announcement of the creation of a Nigerian GSIM brigade.
However, this is not the first attack attributed to groups affiliated with GSIM and the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS).
Indeed, members of the armed group Lakurawa, active since 2023 in the Northwest and claiming allegiance alternately to ISGS and GSIM, exploit the security vacuum in the region to carry out numerous attacks against local communities.
This official claim of an attack by GSIM demonstrates its intent to showcase its capacity to expand toward the coastal states of the Gulf of Guinea, while Nigerian forces are already mobilized against Boko Haram, ISWAP, and armed bandit groups.
