Cameroon: Douala – Maurice Kamto’s Meeting Suppressed Before Launch

On Saturday, June 8th, the planned gathering by Maurice Kamto, president of the MRC (Movement for the Renaissance of Cameroon), was stopped by authorities in Deido. Preventive measures were taken, including the prohibition of motorcycle taxi circulation and the deployment of a police cordon along the routes leading to the party headquarters. Additionally, Maurice Kamto was detained in Bonapriso and prevented from reaching Deido under the pretext of lacking administrative authorization.

The opposition is denouncing this as an infringement on the freedom of assembly, labeling it as “detention.” With less than six months until the 2025 presidential election, this incident raises questions about the fairness of the upcoming vote and the differentiated management of political events.

This episode highlights the growing tensions between the ruling power and the opposition, underscoring the urgency to maintain a peaceful democratic climate in Cameroon.
