The Russian paramilitary Wagner Group has been present in Mali since 2021 and has officially announced its withdrawal from the country. However, this departure appears to be merely a transformation. Indeed, it is now Africa Corps — a structure linked to the Russian Ministry of Defense — that is taking over, with some former Wagner personnel being reintegrated and remaining on the ground. These forces are primarily active in Bamako and northern regions.
This evolution fits into a continuity embraced by Malian authorities. Russia continues to be seen as a key strategic partner in terms of security. Despite recurring accusations regarding alleged atrocities committed by the Wagner Group, Moscow remains a central pillar of Mali’s military cooperation.
At a time when jihadist attacks are increasing, the Kremlin is increasingly viewed as the main interlocutor for the stabilization of the country.
